Pintando con filtros / Painting with filters

Filters are not only a way to alter the colour of a piece or part of a model. They can also be used to create shadows and highlights, or even to paint a piece from the light, adding colour and shadows at the same time. For this we just need our filter to have the right consistency, halfway between a filter and a wash.

First we paint with a very light primer, it can be ivory, light grey or even white.

With a brush we paint the many parts with different colours. The Vallejo WASH filters have the right consistency and place more pigment at the reccessed zones leaving the more exposed parts more iluminated by the base colour.

In a few moments we can have ready the different elements of the stowage of our model. For example this Semovente 75/18 1/35 scale

  1. Hi Federico,

I've noticed that you also use as filters Model Wash colors not just normal paint like Model Air. And with an airbrush.
Are there any differences in airbrushing a wash compared with a normal paint ? Besides not needing thinner.
And most important, would I need to varnish the model first ? I know it's important to varnish it if I apply washes for weathering but filtering during color modulation I don't know if it qualifies.
    Thank you,
    Dan
